Upholding the theme ‘Blood Connects Us All' and the slogan 'Share Life, Give Blood' the World Blood Donor Day 2016 was observed in Kerala on 14th June with different activities and Programs. The State Level function of the Day observance was held at Malabar Christian College, Kozhikode.

Planning meeting
As a preliminary to the State level inauguration of World Blood Donor Day, a District Level Organizing Committee (DLOC) meeting was held at the Chamber of the Additional District Magistrate, Kozhikode on 07/06/2016. Officers from KSACS, Office of the District Medical Officer, DAPCU, representatives from RRC/NSS units of Colleges, representatives of students from Colleges, representatives from Voluntary Organizations etc attended the meeting. The DLOC decided to organize the State level function at Malabar Christian College, Kozhikode. Voluntary Blood Donation Camps, Quiz Competition for College students, Ophthalmic camp in the College campus etc in addition to the seminars on VBD, Organ donation etc as part of the State level inaugural function was planned to be organized. Furthermore, in association with Kerala Blood Donors Forum, it was decided to organize awareness exhibitions at Railway and bus Stations in the town on the World Blood Donor Day.

Quiz Competition
Date & Venue: 13/06/016, 10.00 am at Malabar Christian College, Kozhikode.

A Quiz competition was organized for College students on 13th June. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Susanna Seth, Principal, Malabar Christian College. Total 23 teams participated in the quiz competition. 5 teams were selected for the final round after the initial screening test. Voluntary
Blood Donation, HIV/AIDS, General Knowledge etc were the topics covered for the quiz. After six rounds of questions, among the finalists, the team from Government Homoeopathy Medical College, Kozhikode, Govt College of Nursing, Kozhikode and Ferook College, Kozhikode won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. Cash awards were sponsored by Metro Cardiac Hospital and Malabar Hospital, Kozhikode. Mr. Venugopal, Assistant Director, Blood Safety, KSACS was the Quiz Master. Certificates and Cash prizes were distributed to the winners in the Public Function held on 14/6/2016.

Mass Media Campaigns:
Awareness programs on VBD were carried out through the mass media. Doordarshan on 14th June telecast the message of Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Kerala, aired a live-phone-in program in the Saamoohyapadam segment on 8th June 2016 with Dr. Sulochana, (Sri Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Science) as the guest, telecast Varthamaanakaalam a live programme on 16th June, the guests being Smt. K. K. Shylaja Teacher, Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Sri. Venugopal N (AD-VBD, KSACS). A short talk to promote VBD among women was broadcast by Akashavani in their ‘Mahilalayam’ sector on 10th June, the talker was Smt. Reshmi Madhavan (AD D&P, KSACS). A panel discussion on VBD was also aired by Akashavani in their Health & Family welfare segment on 14th June. Dr.Vijaya Lekshmi, Addl Professor, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, Sri.Venugopal.N, Asst Director (VBD), KSACS, Sri.K.P Rajagopal, Kerala Blood Donors Society and Sri.Baby Prabhakar participated in the discussion. The FM radio channel Club FM aired a talk on VBD by Dr. S. Jayasankar –Project Director, KSACS on the programme ‘Kalakkan Recharge’ –morning programme on 14th June 2016. Thiruvananthapuram local TV channel Media City News started a series on VBD from the first week of June 2016, Sri. Venugopal.N (KSACS) and Smt. Sinu Kadakampally (Quality Manager -Lab Services, KSACS) were the resource persons of the programme. All these programs were done free of cost.

Blood Donation Camp

A Blood donation camp was organized in the venue from 9AM on 14-06-2016.The camp was inaugurated by District AIDS Control Officer, Dr. M.P Jeeja by donating blood . Besides officials from DMO office, Students from Colleges such as Malabar Christian College, Govt. Engineering College, Providence College, Ferook College, Govt. College of Nursing, Govt. Polytechnic, Women’s Polytechnic College etc donated blood. Blood Bank team from General Hospital and W&C Hospital Kozhikode collected blood in the camp. In addition to Certificates saplings of Medicinal plants and other forest trees were presented to blood donors as a token of respect and gratitude towards them.

a. Seminar on Voluntary Blood Donation:
A seminar on importance of Voluntary Blood Donation was organized in the Venue from 10AM on 14th June. Dr. Mohandas. K., Former Blood Bank Medical Officer, and Consultant at District Cooperative Hospital Kozhikode presented the topic. Nearly 125 students participated in the seminar.

b. Seminar on Organ Donation:
Resource Person: Dr. Sreelatha, Professor & HoD, Nephrology, Medical College, Kozhikode. The well known faculty started the session by 12 pm, by using slides in local language, Malayalam, was really fruitful and new to the audience, triggering thoughts of donations to a wider spectrum. After the hour many of the participants who were eager to donate their organs, got clarity about the procedures and practical way of assigning their organs for donating, in case of brain deaths and the willingness of relative or custodian of their bodies.

Cultural Programs:
Cultural program was also organized at the venue wherein students from various colleges in Kozhiikode city participated. Many of the items were based on the importance,need etc of Voluntary blood donation.

Awareness Campaigns:
Simultaneously Kerala State Blood Donors’ Forum in association with DAPCU and ICTC GH, Kozhikode organized awareness campaign with KIOSK, audio visual aids, and IEC materials at New Bus Stand, Kozhikode. District Medical Officer Dr. R.L. Saritha inaugurated the program and addressed the public. Mr. Asokan Alaprath, Secretary, Kerala Blood Donors Forum delivered an awareness speech in the venue.

Ophthalmic Camp:
The Ophthalmic Unit from GH Kozhikode organized the camp in the venue and nearly 129 students undergone eye sight examinations, by the end of the day.

Public Function:
The public function started at 3.00 pm at Malabar Christian College auditorium. The Project Director, Kerala State AIDS Control Society Dr. S. Jayasankar welcomed all to the function. By lighting the lamp, Sri. Thottathil Raveendran, Hon’ble Mayor, Kozhikkode inaugurated the function and delivered inaugural address. Adv. Thomas Mathew presided over the function. Additional District Magistrate, Mr. T. Janil Kumar delivered the key note address. In the function Certificates and awards were distributed by the Hon Mayor and Additional District Magistrate The felicitations were made by District AIDS Control Officer, Dr. Jeeja M.P., District Program Manager NHM, Dr. Baburaj, District Information Officer Mr. Khader Palazhi, MCC College Principal i/c, Dr. Susannah Seth, MSS College NSS PO, Mr. Biju Thomas, Kerala Blood Donors Forum Secretary, Mr. Aoskan Alaprath etc. Public function was concluded at 4 PM with vote of thanks by Mr. Sadeek Kottackal, District Program Manager i/c – DAPCU Kozhikode.
The valedictory function of the World Blood Donor Day observance is scheduled on 15th July, after a month long programs, which will be inaugurated by Smt. K.K.Shylaja Teacher, the Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Kerala. In the function the Hon’ble Minister will honour Persons, Organisations etc which made valuable contribution towards Voluntary blood donation. Along with the function it has been decided to organize a Workshop on VBD for Voluntary Organisations and Government Servants. The venue will be the Durbar Hall at Govt Secretariat, Thiruvanathapuram.
